UNDERSTAND YOUR OPTIONS

What is a debt management plan?

A DMP is a structured way to repay eligible debts. Counseling helps you understand how a plan would work, what it would cost, and whether the payments would fit your budget.

01 / ORGANIZE

A structured repayment approach

A DMP can help organize payments on participating debts. ACCS will explain payment handling and your responsibilities before enrollment.

02 / REVIEW

Understand possible terms

Some creditors may offer different terms through a DMP. Participation and any concessions depend on the creditor and your accounts; they are not guaranteed.

03 / PLAN

Look at the whole budget

A counselor can help assess repayment alongside essential living expenses. The goal is to understand your options, including when a DMP may not fit.

A repayment approach, rooted in counseling.

A DMP organizes repayment of eligible debts with participating creditors. It does not provide a new loan, erase debt, or guarantee lower interest. A counselor should explain your proposed payment, applicable fees, creditor terms, and account restrictions before you decide.

AN INFORMED DECISION

Could a DMP be right for you?

You may want to explore a DMP if credit card payments feel difficult to manage and you want to understand a structured repayment option.

A counselor will assess your situation. This page does not establish eligibility or promise a particular result.

Know before you enroll

  • A DMP is not a new consolidation loan or a promise to settle debt for less.
  • It requires ongoing payments. Not all debts or creditors may participate.
  • Participating credit accounts may need to close or have restrictions.
  • Free counseling does not mean a DMP has no fees. Ask ACCS about applicable fees and terms before deciding.

A FEW COMMON QUESTIONS

Clarity before commitment.

Will a DMP reduce my interest rates or payments?

Creditors may offer different terms, but no reduction is guaranteed. ACCS will review the terms available for your accounts before you decide.

Is counseling free? What about DMP fees?

ACCS offers free credit counseling. Ask about any DMP fees and how they apply to your situation before enrolling.

Do I need to know if I qualify before calling?

No. Counseling is an opportunity to discuss options. Eligibility, affordability, creditor participation, and state availability must be assessed.

Can I contact ACCS from outside Massachusetts?

Yes, you may inquire. ACCS must confirm service availability in your state before offering a DMP.
